Come Prepared
- Have your pilot licence available
- Make sure your logbook is up to date and available
- Have your logbook endorsement page with you
- Bring your identification and medical certificate where applicable
- Have the required training records, recommendations, endorsements, application forms and supporting documents available
- Read through the SACAA test form or company OPC form and make sure you are familiar with the testing content and criteria
These documents will be checked as per the SACAA Regulations.
Grading your Flight Test
SACAA skills tests and competency checks use a 4-point scale. Each aspect is marked on its weakest element.
A score of 4 – Excellent: Well above the minimum. Smooth, precise handling, strong awareness, and risk well managed.
A score of 3 – Meets the standard: A pass. Minor deviations stay within limits and do not detract from the overall performance. Safety is maintained.
A score of 2 – Below the standard: Major deviations, including brief excursions outside limits, but recognised and corrected in time. Safety is not compromised.
A score of 1 – Not competent: Unacceptable deviations, not corrected in time, or the aim of the task is not achieved. Safety is compromised.
What happens next?
A score of 3 or 4 – that aspect is complete.
A score of 2 – that aspect must be re-assessed once during the same flight and re-graded. There is no published limit on how many aspects may receive a score of 2, but a form with an unreassessed score of 2 will not be accepted. On a competency or revalidation check the examiner may teach that item before re-assessing it. On an initial skills test the examiner may re-assess it, but may not teach.
A score of 1 in one to four aspects – those aspects are failed, but the flight continues. After landing you must do remedial training with a flight instructor other than the examiner, wait at least 72 hours, and return with a letter of recommendation. Those failed aspects may then be re-assessed once on the same form.
A score of 1 in five aspects – the test is stopped immediately. After remedial training the entire test or check must be repeated on a new form.
Not competent in airmanship – the full test or check must be repeated on a new form.
